The Georgia State football staff has been very active and has hit certain schools very hard in the Metro Atlanta area this recruiting cycle. In this ongoing series, we will try and cover multiple schools, their prospects and bring you the very latest with each player.
Next up on the list is Arabia Mountain High School. AMHS has three guys on their roster with Georgia State offers in hand and three more that are getting very serious interest. I honestly get the feeling that Georgia State is doing well with these recruits as I’ve heard nothing but positive accounts from the recruits here.
WR Gregory Phillips – Greg is getting a lot of attention lately. At last count, his offer list is up to 21. It includes Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Air Force, Buffalo, Kennesaw State, and Mercer. Our coaches offered him in early April.
When asked about Georgia State he said, “Georgia State has a good football team that is on the rise. I was excited about Georgia State because it’s close to home and there is opportunity for everyone.” He commented on the great players, great coaches, and being in the city as being reasons he’s interested.
DT Kayton Samuels – Samuels has also been on the board for quite some time, getting his Georgia State offer in early April as well. He’s currently up to 10 offers from schools like Arkansas State, Buffalo UL-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, and Old Dominion.
When asked about Georgia State, he commented, “GSU is on a mission, and it starts with hometown recruiting.” We’ve definitely been seeing this coaching staff putting up a fence around the Atlanta area only recently starting to reach out in Alabama, Florida, and North Carolina.
ATH Jonathan Slaton – Jon has been on the radar for a while now, but only recently received his Georgia State offer on May 15. He’s also sporting offers from Kennesaw State, Campbell, UT-Chattanooga, and North Carolina A&T. Slaton plays a variety of positions for the Rams, but Georgia State is recruiting him at cornerback.
There are a couple more guys who haven’t gotten offers yet, but are getting some serious interest from the Georgia State coaching staff.
WR Jonathan Jones - Jonathan didn’t get a chance to make it to a lot of spring games this season because of his busy track schedule. He actually ranks 5th in the state and is his regional titleholder in the 200m. His only offer so far is Mercer, but has visited schools like North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, Duke, and, of course, Georgia State.
LB Demetro Stephens Jr. - Demetro currently holds no offers, according to 247Sports, but has made plenty of visits to top notch schools like Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee. He has performed well at a couple of camps he’s participated in in the last few months.
RB Michael Lockhart - Lockhart also currently holds no offers, but is getting interest from Georgia, Tennessee, and Charlotte. He’s rated as a three star and has visited Georgia State a couple of times now. According to JC Shurburtt, National Recruiting Director for 247Sports, Lockhart has performed well at camps and would be a steal for Georgia State.
That’s it for our Program Focus on Arabia Mountain High School. As you can see, there is plenty of talent here with a really good shot at landing any or all of these guys. The coaches are doing a great job getting recruits excited about what we are trying to build at Georgia State. It will be interesting to see how many of these guys end up sticking around in Atlanta.
Let us know if you have any questions about any of these guys. Who do you think we've got the best shot at? Who would you like to see in Blue and White?
